Take the Water Saving Pledge
I, , promise to be conscious of my daily water usage and do my best to reduce it.
I promise to:
- Turn off the water while brushing my teeth
- Operate my dishwasher and washer only with full loads
- Be vigilant and promptly repair any plumbing leaks (roughly 2,000-20,000 gallons of water are wasted each year because of leaks)
- Turn my water off whenever I leave my home for an extended period of time
- Water my lawn less, or not at all!
- Take a shorter shower
I will seriously consider:
- A rain water catchment barrel for watering my lawn and garden
- Upgrading my shower heads and other plumbing fixtures to low flow fixtures

Sustainability Is Important To Us
We are all so fortunate to have a clean supply of water, it truly is a precious resource – however that supply is severely limited so we all must do our part to reduce water usage. Click here to calculate your usage!
In addition to reducing our water usage, we also must work together to keep our oceans and waterways clean. There are many small, simple things we can all do to help, bringing awareness to these issues is the first step.
Did You Know?
- At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from diseases associated with lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.
- In four days, the United States uses more water than the world uses oil in a year.
- There are 326 million trillion gallons of water on Earth, only 2% of which is freshwater. Of that 2%, about 1.6% is locked up in glaciers and ice caps.
- Nearly one third of the Chesapeake Bay is incapable of supporting life – Click here for more information.
- The average home wastes about 9,000 gallons a year waiting for hot water.
- Typically a family of four can use up to 400 gallons of water every day.
What Can We Do?
- Consider getting a rainwater catchment barrel this spring instead of using potable water for your plants. (Check with your local government. At various points, both the Town of Berlin and the Town of Ocean City offered these barrels for sale.)
- Upgrade old toilets and fixtures to newer efficient ones. Newer fixtures and toilets use considerably less water than older models.
- If you can’t afford to upgrade your toilet – consider filling up a water bottle and placing it in your tank – this can displace some water so you ultimately end up using less for each flush.
- Try to only run your dishwasher or washing machine when it’s full – this can save on energy as well as water usage.
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. This alone can save up to 1,800 gallons of water per person each year.
- Check your pipes and faucets for leaks – even the smallest leak can add up and potentially waste hundreds of gallons each month.
